Music is essential in the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. There
was lots of music all weekend at the Communication for Community
Survival conference. Kevin, a sound tech student, performed on-air
for the conference and the community.
Community radio is a grassroots communications tool for the
francophones of the Port au Port Peninsula. Yvonne Benoit and
Jeanette Peters of Cap St-Georges recorded streeters at the
conference.
Most of the conference was live on-air, thanks to the co-operation of
Regional Cable. Anne Parsons of Burgeo, moderator Roger Carter and
Cecil Godwin of Fogo Island were among the many participants who
took part in phone-in panel discussions.
Roger Hulan and Lisa Mulcahy work behind the cameras. Portable
television studio equipment for the conference was provided by
Ryakuga.
Janice Woodworth hosted live television programming at the
conference.
Cindy O'Neill (front), facilitator of the popular theatre workshop, says,
"We all have a voice, and we're going to get a chance to get our voice
out there."
Evelyn Knight came from the University of Kentucky to bring us news
of the community work of Appalshop, a multidisciplinary arts and
education center in a rural area of the United
States.
