of the library, and community television is done by
running the cable into the library.

for them when they need it.
There is an old camera that belongs to the Elementary
school but it doesn't work, so the students can't use

they bought, but we don't have access to it.

audio mixer. I also have cordless lapel mic that
belongs to the development association which hooks up

MAINSTREAM MEDIA
The basis of external communication from the group to
the community is getting to know your local media
conduits. In other words, get to know on a first name
basis the people who can help, whether that person be
the program manager at the local radio station or the
grocery manager who controls the community bulletin
board.
1. Does your community have community cable
television? Are volunteers (groups) allowed to produce
programming? (See a recipe for community television.)

Lourdes has a hook-up for community cable. Yes, as
long as it is cleared with the school (where the
hook-up is).
2. Does your community have a local newspaper? Will
they use press releases and photos from your group?

The most local newspaper is the Georgian out of
Stephenville. They welcome news from the Peninsula
and are receptive to pictures, articles and press
releases.
The Western Star, a Corner Brook publication, is also
delivered on the Peninsula. It has a reporter who
works out of Stephenville. I have the contact
information for the Stephenville reporter.
3. Who is your local representative for the regional
(national) newspaper? Do you know reporters who
normally report on events and issues relevant to your
group?

There is a new reporter at the Georgian, and I am
unsure of who it is. I do have the contact numbers
for the Georgian (phone and fax), as well as their
e-mail address.
4. Does your community have a local radio station?
What is their policy on public service announcements?
Do they have any time slots available for programming
from your group?

The most local radio station is CFCB in Stephenville.
They are good with public service announcements. They
have a calendar of events, etc.
5. Do you have a community or college radio station?
Is it possible for your group to produce a program or
special?

There is a radio station at Mainland but they have all
french content.
6. Which of these tools of community communications
would work for you and be useful in your community?

A press release could be put in the Georgian which
reaches a lot of people on the Peninsula. The Western
Star (out of Corner Brook) is also gotten here, but on
a smaller scale.

Poster can be put up almost anywhere on the Peninsula
where there are confectionary stores. For community
television events in Lourdes, I put up posters in the
Superette, the Gas Bar and the Lourdes Co-op.

There are a lot of community meetings happening all
around the area. I have to pick and choose what, if
any, is connected to Sharing Our Future. (Even
though I feel I should be involved more, there are, of
course, time restrictions)

Georgian and on CFCB radio.

activities when they are done with the classes at the
school.
The Port-au-Port Economic Development Association put
out a flyer in November to all the residents within
it's catchment area (all the Peninsula and as well as
Port-au-Port East, Fox Island River and Point au Mal),
which noted that a Sharing Our Future Facilitator was
working out of the office. There is discussion about
having a regular flyer at least once, maybe twice, a
year. If this follows through, it could be used.
