I flew in yesterday from many days in new york where I was thrilled to be able to drink in some elizabeth & some martha bowers.
dance exchange put on a wonderful performance/tasting of their work from which i emerged totally glowing. elizabeth and vincent thomas (who was in whitesburg this summer) were both there & were incredibly beautiful as was the entire company. though no stephen, so that made things a little dimmer of course. they danced excerpts from their hallelujah series & more - i left bowled over by their talent, their fluidity.
and two days ago i spent the afternoon riding around in martha's little station wagon, steeled against the winds, learning about red hook, the harbor community in brooklyn where she does lots of work. she showed us where she did 'safe harbor' and 'on the waterfront' - the projects she showed to us during her presentation at appalshop, as well as her husband's wonderful glassworks shop, & all the revitalization that's happening there at the seashore. old reworked warehouses and piers , a sugar factory that'll hopefully be reworked, & more. very lovely & very clear how martha has become committed to this place. she even introduced us to friends who live on a refurbished barge and then treated me to a cheese sandwich. good people.
